HISTORY OF SERVICE

United Way agency, University Settlement has a long and distinguished history of service on Cleveland’s eastside.

Established in 1926 by Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) as a training site for social workers, the Settlement’s original purpose was to help European immigrants adapt to their new environment.

In 1936, the agency became independent of the University and, in the 1970s, redirected its efforts and created programs that strengthened families, eased hunger and homelessness, created and improved housing, and addressed the special needs of our most vulnerable citizens -- children and the elderly. University Settlement takes pride in its tradition of being in the forefront in identifying human service needs and developing quality programs to address them.

The Hunger Center is the largest in the county, offering groceries and community meals. With the support of the Adelphia / Cleveland City Council Neighborhood Technology Fund, University Settlement has been able to build and expand its public computer initiatives, leading to the award and September installation of the Magic Johnson/HP Inventor Center. The Hewlett-Packard Inventor Center is a 24-terminal computer center, offering computer-based education for the public and after-school activities for elementary school students in the neighborhood schools. Our after-school program, the 21st Century Learning Center, has demonstrated positive academic impact for children, boosting grades, test performance and attendance.

The University Settlement has a long history of commitment to youth programs. In 1999, the Settlement was recognized as a national leader by the Annie E. Casey Foundation for the Family to Family Foster Care Program, while our Broadway Angels youth group received the 1999 Disney Hometown Heroes Award.

The Settlement has a consistent record of implementing innovative and sustainable solutions to social problems. University Settlement continually strives to be a model for the efficient and effective delivery of social services. The agency is able to deliver its services in a highly cost effective manner because its staff of approximately 50 full- and part-time employees is supplemented by literally thousands of volunteers.
