Building Strong Families
The Fatherhood Connections and Strengthening Families Programs–
Two programs working together to support families of all shapes and sizes.
University Settlement recognizes that families are made up of all types of individuals: sisters; mothers;fathers; aunts; grandparents; friends; neighbors; etc. Our programs will support you, those who surround you and your children.
Our Strengthening Families program offers strengths-based case management, family-centered Family Education Sessions and hosts Parent Cafes to help families learn the skills necessary to advocate for their needs. Once admitted into the program, clients work with staff to identify their needs and set personal goals in 5 areas; healthcare, employment, legal issues, parenting, and education.
Often, program staff utilize wraparound support to provide clients with items such as bus passes, cleaning supplies, and rental assistance to ensure that clients can continue to attend the program, and that both parents and children remain safely housed. In addition, many of those served by the program attend an 8-week long Family Education Session designed to support clients and community members as they identify and work toward overcoming their barriers to success.
To support clients after they complete the program, 3 Parent Cafes are held throughout the year. These informal gatherings offer former and current clients the opportunity to network and support each other, as well as provide feedback to the program staff.
In the last year, 110 individuals participated in Family Empowerment Sessions. Of those clients who attended all 8 Empowerment Sessions, 100% saw an improvement in their overall Protective Factors Survey score. Continually, 69 families participated in strengths-based case management. 85 families utilized program wrap support to help them meet their most basic needs. In addition to support for household products, bus tickets, and personal documents, the program also assisted 10 families with rental and/or utility assistance.
Fatherhood Connections focuses on fathers at Willow, Mound, Fullerton and Warner Road Girl’s Academy. The program offers case management, support groups, parent education sessions, and father-child activities and events.
In the last program year, 1,435 fathers (duplicated number) participated in various program activities. 289 fathers participated in weekly support groups, and case management was provided to 87 fathers. 50 fathers were trained as coaches to assist, recruit and encourage other men to participate in the program.
