University Settlement has partnered with The NRP Group, the largest developer of affordable housing in the country, to construct a $20 million mixed-use development comprised of 88 affordable apartments and townhomes and 20,000+ square feet of commercial space that will become the new home and programming space for University Settlement. This will be located at 5115 Broadway Avenue, where the St. Alexis Hospital once stood, now just an empty lot.

Why a new building?

University Settlement has been at its current site—a main building, with a smaller building across the street—for 36 years. The facility is crumbling, unhygienic, dangerous, and restrictive. The roof leaks, rodents get into the building, the commercial kitchen floods, and worse. If architecture conveys values, University Settlement’s building conveys
hopelessness and despair.
